Balanga: Haunted by the Past
Balanga is the Fall of Bataan Marker. May be found in the Capitol Compound, this marker is in memory of our war veterans, living and dead. This symbolizes the courage and the enduring commitment of a Filipino soldier to his country. It is also known as the Surrender Site Marker (at Talisay). Marking the place where last defense of Bataan was given up during World War II. On April 9,1942, general Edward P. King, Commander of the US Forces in Bataan, surrendered to the Japanese Forces.
Balanga Elementary School is one of the schools in Balanga. It is also one of the most historical school because before it became school,it was a garrison –a place also called as shelter at the time of the Japanese war. Many Filipinos and Americans were brought in here for medical and other support. Of course many guerrillas died here a long time ago.But many teachers, vendors, administrative aids who are working here for many years said that their bodies might have gone but their souls are still there.
Our team conducted a research about the history behind the heritage surrender site of Balanga City which is now the Balanga Elementary School. Our study also tells about the said rumors about the spirits of the deceased soldiers.
